How Ashtanga Yoga Transformed a Life of Struggle into a Mission of Service and Recovery
From addiction to purpose, Taylor Hunt’s story is one of profound transformation. Today, he is an internationally respected yoga teacher, author, and founder of a non-profit organization that helps people recover from addiction through the ancient practice of Ashtanga yoga. But the journey that brought him to this place of healing and impact began in darkness.
Raised in Dublin, Ohio, Taylor’s early life was defined by struggle. Addiction had taken over, leaving him feeling lost and disconnected. But it was through the path of sobriety—and eventually yoga—that he found a way back to himself. Now, with 19 years of sobriety, Taylor uses his experience to guide and inspire others on their own healing paths.
“I was completely lost,” Taylor recalls. “Yoga gave me structure, purpose, and a way to rebuild my life.”
His memoir, A Way From Darkness, chronicles his personal journey from addiction to recovery, and how the discipline of yoga became a cornerstone of that transformation. The book has allowed him to connect with people across the world, sharing a message of hope and resilience.
Central to Taylor’s recovery and continued growth is his devotion to Ashtanga yoga—a rigorous, traditional practice known for its transformative power. He makes annual pilgrimages to Mysore, India, to study with his teacher, Sharath Jois, and in 2013 received Level 2 Authorization to teach Ashtanga, a significant recognition within the lineage.
“Ashtanga is more than just physical postures,” he explains. “It’s a daily practice of discipline and self-discovery. It challenges you and forces you to grow.”
Taylor now leads daily Mysore-style classes at Ashtanga Yoga Columbus and travels internationally to teach workshops. He’s known for preserving the authenticity of the Ashtanga method while making it accessible to people from all walks of life.
Recognizing how yoga supported his own recovery, Taylor founded the Trini Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to bringing yoga to those recovering from addiction. The foundation offers scholarships for yoga classes and builds community-based support systems to help individuals in recovery find stability and healing.
“We want to make yoga available to people who need it the most,” Taylor says. “The practice helped save my life, and I want to share that with others.”
With the help of donations and community partnerships, the Trini Foundation continues to extend its reach, proving that healing is not only possible—it’s powerful.
Taylor’s influence goes beyond his teaching and writing. He owns Ashtanga Yoga Savannah and runs One Percent Theory, a lifestyle and apparel brand that aligns with his mission of creating supportive, growth-centered communities.
“My job is to help as many people as I can,” Taylor says. “Whether it’s through teaching, writing, or the foundation, I just want to give back.”
His journey is a living testament to the transformative power of yoga—not just as a physical practice, but as a way of life. Through breath, movement, and unwavering dedication, Taylor Hunt continues to inspire others to reclaim their lives and move forward with purpose.
“Transformation is possible,” Taylor says. “It just takes one step, one breath at a time.”
