The Future of Fashion: A New Vision with Achim Berg

Inside Achim Berg’s Bold Mission to Reinvent Fashion Through Insight, Innovation, and Impact

From McKinsey strategist to founder of FashionSIGHTS, Achim Berg unveils his mission to reshape fashion through research, responsibility, and reinvention.

Achim Berg is a towering figure in the global fashion industry. After a distinguished 24-year career at McKinsey & Company—where he helped build its apparel, fashion, and luxury practice—Berg has launched a bold new venture: FashionSIGHTS, a corporate think tank committed to decoding and shaping the future of fashion.

Rooted in data-driven research, strategic foresight, and global connectivity, FashionSIGHTS is Berg’s answer to a rapidly evolving industry in desperate need of deeper insight and sustainable transformation. Speaking exclusively to us, Berg shares why he made the leap, what lessons legacy brands like Armani offer, and why the U.S. market is causing concern for fashion leaders worldwide.

A New Chapter for a Fashion Veteran

“I could’ve stayed another ten years at McKinsey,” Berg admits, “but I wanted to do something more consequential, something more aligned with my passion for research and strategic advising.” That led to the formation of FashionSIGHTS in 2024—an initiative focused on thought leadership and high-level advisory services tailored to senior decision-makers, entrepreneurs, and investors in fashion.

Initial feedback has been promising, with strong interest from across the industry. But Berg is clear-eyed about the challenge. “It’s my own venture and comes with risk. That’s what I was looking for.”

Lessons from a Legend

Berg recently contributed to a book on Giorgio Armani, a designer he clearly reveres. “It’s the timelessness of the Armani brand,” he says. “Mr. Armani never compromised. He built a business with extreme care and quality, pioneering across categories—accessories, furniture, food, hospitality—without ever losing his essence.”

For Berg, Armani stands among the few who didn’t just succeed in fashion but shaped it. “There’s a lot to learn from the man and from his brand, especially for new designers navigating today’s hyper-competitive, hyper-digital world.”

Rethinking Fashion’s Future

Berg believes the industry is at an inflection point. “A unique idea has always been the foundation of fashion success. But now, that must be paired with an innovative and distinctive business model,” he explains.

He sees opportunities in the continued fusion of tradition and technology. While social media and digital sales channels are vital, they cannot replace classic fashion storytelling and craft. Brands like AMI Paris exemplify this hybrid approach—marrying a modern go-to-market strategy with timeless brand values.

And despite its volatility, fashion has remained one of the top wealth-generating industries globally. “After tech and finance, fashion has created the most billionaires. It has a way of delivering shared value across the ecosystem.”

The U.S. Market: A Cautionary Tale

Yet, Berg expresses concern about the state of fashion in the United States. “We were hoping for a pro-business government,” he says. “Instead, the landscape is becoming more uncertain. Tariff programs are sending shockwaves through the industry.”

According to Berg, these disruptions are particularly damaging in an industry reliant on intricate, globally integrated supply chains. “Brands are waiting. We’re likely to see a soft Q1 and Q2 in 2025—fewer store openings, slimmer marketing budgets, a hold on investments.”

But even amid uncertainty, Berg sees opportunity: “This is the perfect moment to rethink, remodel, and remix. FashionSIGHTS was created to be part of that evolution.”

A Mission with Purpose

At its core, FashionSIGHTS is not just about profit. It’s about shaping a fashion industry that is smarter, more resilient, and more responsible. “We want to help the industry serve not just its fans, but also the broader community and the planet,” Berg says.

With a powerful blend of intellectual rigor, market insight, and social consciousness, Achim Berg is charting a new course for fashion—one that respects its past, addresses its present challenges, and embraces a smarter, more sustainable future.
