Navigate Business Trips with Ease and Efficiency Using Expert Advice

How to Ensure a Smooth and Successful Business Trip

Corporate travel can be demanding, even for the most seasoned travelers. Chris Dutton, Founder of The CEO Magazine, shares his insights and tips on navigating the complexities of business trips to ensure a smooth and successful journey.

As the founder of a global magazine, I clock in a substantial number of international travel miles each year. Through these experiences, I’ve picked up valuable tips and tricks from fellow executives and my own journeys. Corporate travel is both a blessing and a curse, demanding a readiness for anything and everything.

Be Prepared

Chaos lurks around every corner on a business trip. I remember an incident on an airline (which shall remain nameless) where we had to return to the airport because the luggage door had fallen off. The delay was long, waiting for a door technician to wake up and reattach it. Such experiences underscore the importance of being prepared.

Choose the Right Luggage

The first step in preparing for corporate travel is selecting the right luggage. It’s not just about having a good laptop case for the cabin and a large check-in bag. I once had a fabric case returned to me soaking wet after a flight. That was the last time I opted for light fabric.

For my recent trip to Necker Island in the Caribbean, I chose Samsonite luggage—sturdy, lightweight, spacious, and extremely durable. It survived the complex journey from Sydney, with multiple stopovers and various aircraft sizes, unscathed.

Invest in Quality

Paying a bit more for better service can significantly enhance your travel experience. For instance, I prefer routes that reduce the number of flights, even if they are slightly more expensive. On my trip to Necker Island, I flew from Sydney to Dallas, then on to Puerto Rico before heading to Tortola. Fewer flights mean less stress and reduced chances of delays.

Adjust to the Time Zone

When you board your flight, start adjusting to the time at your destination. If it’s dinnertime there, eat dinner and have a glass of wine on the plane. This adjustment helps mitigate jet lag, which is crucial for hitting the ground running on a corporate trip.

Manage Yourself on the Plane

Hydrate constantly throughout the flight, using electrolyte supplements. Wear a sleep mask and noise-canceling headphones or earbuds to minimize distractions. I also recommend wearing your own pajamas, as they are much more comfortable than those provided by the airlines.

Choose the Right Airlines

For long-haul flights, Emirates is my top choice for business or first class due to their superior offering. Domestically, I always opt for Qantas for their reliability. Delays can have severe consequences on corporate trips, so choosing a reliable airline is essential.

Arrive Ready

After arriving at Necker Island, I was impressed with my Samsonite luggage’s durability. A good piece of luggage is a worthwhile investment for any business traveler.

Embrace a Corporate Travel Mindset

Corporate travel requires a different approach compared to an annual holiday. There’s often no luxury of jet lag recovery time, making it essential to be prepared to start working immediately upon arrival. While my strategies may not work for everyone, these universal tips can help all executives look and deliver their best.

In conclusion, corporate travel demands preparation, flexibility, and the right tools. By following these tips, you can ensure a successful business trip, arriving ready to meet your professional commitments head-on.
