The First Non-Korean to Lead the Automotive Giant, Muñoz Takes the Helm Amid Industry Challenges and Opportunities
South Korea’s Hyundai Motor Company (HMC) has named José Muñoz as its new president and co-CEO, marking a groundbreaking moment in the company’s history. Effective January 1, 2025, Muñoz’s appointment represents a strategic move to strengthen Hyundai’s global operations and navigate the evolving landscape of the automotive industry.
Muñoz will share leadership duties with current co-CEOs Euisun Chung and Lee Dong-seok, taking over from Jaehoon Chang, who has been promoted to vice chair of Hyundai Motor Group. His responsibilities will include overseeing Hyundai’s operations across North and South America, driving global innovation in next-generation mobility, and enhancing the company’s reputation as a leading player in the automotive sector.
José Muñoz’s appointment comes at a critical juncture for Hyundai, as the industry faces challenges like economic uncertainties, fluctuating demand, and the high costs associated with electric vehicle (EV) production. Muñoz will play a key role in advancing Hyundai’s efforts in electrification, hydrogen technologies, and cutting-edge powertrains.
In addition, Muñoz will lead the global “Project for Humanity” initiative, a customer-focused strategy that aligns with Hyundai’s long-term vision to create sustainable and human-centric mobility solutions.
“I’m honored to take on this role during such a pivotal time,” Muñoz said. “Operational excellence, customer satisfaction, and relentless innovation will remain at the core of our approach as we strive to shape the future of mobility and strengthen Hyundai’s global footprint.”
Since joining Hyundai in 2019, Muñoz has served as president and global COO, as well as president and CEO of Hyundai and Genesis Motor North America. Under his leadership, the company achieved record-breaking sales, improved brand performance, and expanded market share in the Americas.
In his role within Hyundai’s Global Operations division, Muñoz demonstrated exceptional expertise in service, sales, and product planning, earning widespread recognition for his strategic vision and ability to drive results.
Outgoing president and CEO Jaehoon Chang commended Muñoz’s leadership, stating, “His extensive experience and proven track record make him the ideal choice to navigate the rising competitiveness and uncertainties in our industry.”
The automotive sector is undergoing a seismic transformation, with economic pressures and the race toward electrification reshaping the competitive landscape. Observers believe that Muñoz’s leadership will enable Hyundai to not only weather these challenges but also seize emerging opportunities.
Hyundai’s recent successes in EV technology, hydrogen innovation, and customer-centric design have set a strong foundation. With Muñoz at the helm, the company aims to accelerate its trajectory, expanding its global reach and reinforcing its position as a leader in next-generation mobility.
As the first non-Korean to lead Hyundai, José Muñoz brings a fresh perspective to the table, underscoring the company’s commitment to diversity, innovation, and global leadership. His tenure is expected to drive transformative growth, ensuring Hyundai’s continued relevance in an increasingly competitive industry.
With a steadfast focus on innovation, operational excellence, and customer satisfaction, Hyundai’s new leadership signals an exciting era of progress. As Muñoz prepares to take the reins, the company is poised to achieve new milestones, redefining mobility for a sustainable future.
