Absa CEO Arrie Rautenbach is set to retire following a notable drop in the company’s profits for the first half of 2024. The decision for early retirement, mutually agreed upon with the board, will take effect on April 15, 2025, with Rautenbach stepping down as CEO and Executive Director on October 15, 2024. During his final six months, he will serve a garden leave as part of his contractual notice period.
Absa expressed deep gratitude for Rautenbach’s dedication and the significant impact he has had during his 27-year tenure with the group. Under his leadership, Absa navigated through numerous challenges, although the recent financial results signaled a downturn, leading to his early departure.
The profit decline, particularly a 9% decrease in basic earnings per share and a 6% drop in headline earnings per share for the six months ending June 30, 2024, prompted the leadership change. Despite these setbacks, the group saw a 3% increase in total income and maintained its interim dividend at 685 cents per share.
In response to Rautenbach’s retirement, Absa has announced Charles Russon as the Interim Chief Executive Officer for both Absa Group and Absa Bank, effective October 15, 2024, pending regulatory approval. Russon, who has been with Absa since 2006 and has served as the Chief Executive of Absa’s Corporate and Investment Bank (CIB) since 2018, brings a wealth of experience to his new role. He will also join the boards as an executive director.
Yasmin Masithela will succeed Russon as Interim Chief Executive Officer of Absa’s CIB, also starting October 15, 2024, subject to regulatory approval. Masithela, currently the Managing Executive Corporate Transactional Banking at CIB, has been a key player in the group since May 2019 and has held several significant positions within the Group Executive Committee.
As Absa transitions through this leadership change, the company remains focused on stabilizing its financial performance while navigating the challenges ahead. The incoming leadership team is expected to build on the foundation laid by Rautenbach and guide the group through this critical period of transformation.
