Melissa Sanasie has spent more than a decade navigating the ever-evolving landscape of digital marketing. With a rare blend of analytical precision and creative flair, she has helped businesses—from agile startups to Fortune 500 giants—cut through the noise and truly connect with their audiences. Today, as a Marketing Manager at Shopify, she leads customer acquisition, engagement, and retention strategies that not only drive results but also tell stories that resonate.
“I’ve always been fascinated by how marketing connects people with brands,” Melissa says. “Good marketing isn’t about selling—it’s about solving problems and creating experiences.”
Melissa grew up in Toronto, where her passion for marketing sparked early. She pursued a Bachelor of Commerce in Marketing Management at Ryerson University (now Toronto Metropolitan University), eager to turn her interest into a career. During her studies, she completed internships at local agencies that gave her hands-on experience in social media, analytics, and content strategy.
“Those early internships taught me a lot,” she recalls. “I saw how fast digital marketing was evolving and knew I had to keep learning.”
To stay ahead of the curve, she earned certifications in Google Analytics, Google Ads, and digital marketing strategy—skills that would become foundational in her career.
Melissa’s first major opportunity came at the Hudson’s Bay Company, where she worked as a Marketing Coordinator. There, she managed social media accounts, supported campaign launches, and conducted market research. A milestone moment came when she led her first influencer collaboration—a bold and innovative move at the time.
“It was new territory,” she says, “but it really helped build brand awareness.”
Her journey continued at RBC, where she stepped into the role of Senior Digital Marketing Specialist. At one of Canada’s largest financial institutions, Melissa honed her skills in performance marketing, paid advertising, and automation.
“RBC gave me a deeper understanding of how to measure success in real time and adjust strategies based on data,” she explains.
In 2021, Melissa joined Shopify, a global e-commerce powerhouse, as a Marketing Manager. Her responsibilities span multi-channel strategies, SEO, influencer partnerships, and social media engagement. She also leads paid campaigns and content initiatives aimed at supporting entrepreneurs and business owners.
“We’re not just marketing a product—we’re helping entrepreneurs build their businesses,” she says. “That’s what makes the work so rewarding.”
Her adaptability and insight have made a measurable impact. Under her leadership, one content-driven campaign increased organic traffic by 60% in a single year. She also implemented a social media strategy that boosted engagement and enhanced brand sentiment.
What sets Melissa apart is her ability to fuse storytelling with strategy. She understands that behind every data point is a person—and behind every campaign, an opportunity to connect.
“Marketing is part art, part science,” she says. “The best campaigns come from understanding both the numbers and the emotions behind them.”
Melissa brings a versatile skillset that includes SEO, content marketing, performance marketing, and marketing automation. She’s fluent in industry-standard tools like HubSpot, Salesforce, and Marketo, which she leverages to bring campaigns to life.
Melissa is not just building a career—she’s lifting others as she climbs. An active member of Toronto’s marketing community, she speaks at events like Social Media Week Toronto and the Canadian Digital Marketing Conference. She’s also passionate about mentorship, guiding young professionals as they find their path in the industry.
“I had great mentors when I was starting out,” she says. “Now, I want to do the same for others.”
Her expertise and insights have been featured in blogs and business publications, where she continues to advocate for thoughtful, human-centered marketing.
Outside of her professional achievements, Melissa enjoys traveling, exploring Toronto’s vibrant food scene, and staying active through fitness. She also participates in local programs that mentor young women interested in marketing and entrepreneurship.
“Marketing is a huge part of my life, but it’s not the only thing,” she says. “Traveling helps me see new perspectives, and staying active keeps me balanced.”
In a field that changes by the day, Melissa remains a lifelong learner. She embraces new trends and technologies, staying curious and open to what’s next.
“The best marketers never stop learning,” she says. “That’s what keeps this industry so exciting.”
